Hi all and especially Professor Millstone,

I just have to share my elation about calling a whole evening Saturday with the brand new nine-piece Floating Bridge Band in our first ever gig together. It was a community dance in Hartland VT, a benefit for the 8th grade class trip, so filled with lots of 8th graders and their families, plus some stalwart Northern Spy regulars whose good cheer and skills were a huge addition and a few random local residents who just knew my name and came out of curiosity. The band sounded great (and will sound even better as we implement the things we learned about balancing our mic-ing next time) -- all the dances worked, the crowd was big enough but not too big, it was a blast.

The thing that I most want to share, though, is that even though I stuck mostly with my established repertoire (learned through my apprenticeship with David Millstone) of beginners longways, circle, square and sicillian circle dances, I did successfully fit in two actual contras and they both worked!! This has been my big fear after having one line of a contra completely break down at the Promise of Place conference this fall after I over-estimated the dancing skills of the crowd. First I did the Family Contra, that somebody shared on this list a while ago. What a great dance! We had little 3-4 year olds holding their own. Progressing via that double do-si-do is just a fantastic idea understandable by all. At the end, when most of the kids had left, I did another contra, Jefferson's Reel, on Rachel's advice. There was a high percentage of experienced dancers by that point, only one line left, and it was a piece of cake--I probably could have done several.

So anyway, I am flying high! What fun this is. I wish I could be part of the June course, but will be taking Bob Dalsamar's course in North Carolina which conflicts, but if there's another, I'd love to do it.

Best,
Delia Clark

I'll be there in June as well, and sometime I'll actually make a posting to this list. Sure do appreciate the digest version, and especially appreciate all of the thoughtful and thought-provoking contributions that folks are
making. It's informing my calling practice in more ways than one.

Looking forward to seeing and dancing with many of you at the DownEast
Country Dance Fest in Topsham, Maine in a couple of weeks.

Cheers! Chrissy Fowler
