The dance that I frequently use as a first dance with a Hey is:

Flirting Attempt
Marian Hepburn
(adapted by G. Marshall)

A1 N B&S
A2 Circle L 3/4
        P Sw
B1 LL F&B
        Women Chain
B2 Hey

If you've got a lot of new folks, when people first start out, have them look past their current neighbor for their next neighbor. Tell them that they're going to need to look for this person in a few minutes, and then remind them of that right before the Hey. That can help them get oriented out of the hey, because that's where they're likely to have problems if they have them at all -- coming out of the hey (or out of the confusion that was supposed to be a hey) and not knowing where to go.

Good Luck!

Thanks! I like the "slide left, then circle with New Neighbours." I will definitely add this to my list of "soon to be called" dances.

For my immediate need, I forgot to mention in my original email that Bev also requested that the dance I call be IMPROPER (when I wrote my original email to the group I felt that I was missing something - oops!).

Here is a simple but great hey for four dance:
Ted Crane's 'Slippery Swing', which I learned from
Mary Desrosier's calling at the Old Songs Festival
with a very mixed group of festival dancers:

Becket

A1: Circle L all the way around
With partner slide left and circle left
with new Neighbors 3/4.

A2: Dosido this neighbor, swing neighbor

B1: full hey for four across the set: women pass R Shldrs

B2: Women cross again, passing right shoulders, swing partner.

Good luck,

Peter Amidon
