Hi Mavis!

Here’s the dance that you’re thinking of….. “Hey Gorgeous” by Luis Gamez
(variation of “Hey Man” by Paul Balliet, as you said). Dance is listed at the
end of this email. As a result of your posting I looked it up, as I also
remembered it. You probably scribbled down some notes at Echo Summit Camp in
this past Sept, Carol Ormand called it on Saturday nite 9/16/06, second half
after the two squares.

I called the dance last Saturday at Aromas. There was a hot chocolate party
afterwards and I asked the dancers what they thought about the “new” dances I
called (this one and two others that I had picked up at Pinewoods) and asked
for feedback from the dancers and we had time to chat at the party….

Side note -- … We had a heavy rainstorm (by California standards!) and the
dance was very small with experienced dancers only, and I ended up calling and
dancing most of the night to help the small numbers and gender imbalance! So,
I got to dance it too as well as the other two I was trying out. The first
half, I called squares, circle mixers, scatter dances, extra waltzes, by the
end of the first half we just had enough people for contras but wouldn’t have
if I hadn’t danced too. I know this group pretty well, and had worked with
the band before, so it worked out fine. -- End, side note...

The dancer’s comments on this dance was they really like it, it’s very
smooth, and has A LOT of Partner interaction, which some really liked and
others commented it is great if you like the partner your dancing with….. So,
just be sure to place it at a place in the evening where you want a lot of
partner interaction.

Here is the funniest thing about this message!! I seriously thought the
dance was written for Carol Ormand… (yes, appropriate, yes?!?!). I thought
that’s what she said when I was she called it at camp, and I thought I heard
her say that when I listened to my recording of the dance when was studying it.
That’s what I announced at the dance last week (no callers in the crowd so it
wasn’t picked up!). Well, I checked with her to be sure I had the dance
correct, the author etc, before I posted this on Shared Weight as I almost
always check the dance back to the original source (web, book, author, or who I
got it from) as I love knowing the trivia about the dance… Well, she says it
wasn’t written for her (to her knowledge at least!)… So… I almost started a
rumor! Oh well! That’s how I’ll remember the dance at least! Well, I think
I'll just have to call Carol that from now on! : ) "Hey Gorgeous!"

  Have fun,

  Karen Fontana

Variation of “Hey Man” by Paul Balliet

Balliet - It is a
wonderful dance. I always alternate the A1 section:
Men 1st time Ladies next time. it has such a
great flow. By the time I got to pen and paper - I
probably had the figures all messed up. I found
the original paper I scribbled on - I had written
what looks like
Lou Gomez --- but that could have been from
something else I scribbled. Oh well - I will hope
that at some time on a dance floor - someone will call
it and I will have the opportunity to dance it and get
it written down.
