Star promenade and butterfly whirl is probably my favorite (as a dancer) of the obscure contra moves. I've written several dances with them, but most of them have yet to be tested.
Some well-known star promenade dances that haven't been mentioned: Sweet Music [Amy Kahn] (butterfly whirl to hey) www.davidsmukler.syracusecountrydancers.org/Kahn.html#n2 There is no way to peace, peace is the way [Erik Hoffman] (star promenade to star promenade) www.erikhoffman.com/peace.html Some others that I like, that haven't already been mentioned, and are in my "to call" queue: American Gothic [Nathaniel Jack] (an odd dance) www.sharedweight.net/pipermail/callers/2004-November/000037.html Bolle Me Over [Becky Hill] (whirl -> Hey -> next neighbors) *Rosen-Hill collection page 10* Huckleberry Friend [Tom Calwell/Myra Hirschberg] (promenade around set->star promenade) www.dancingthread.ca/condance.htm#huck Joined at the Hip [Russel Owen] (another star promenade to star promenade) arcserve.astro.washington.edu/dances/ A Kiss Upon the Head [Joe Peidle] (a rather complex but flowing dance with a whirl-> circle right) *Give and Take page 120* Mad Gypsy [Becky Hill/Cal Hurd] (women star promenading partner, ending with men do-si-do) (Most interesting part is more than just the star promenade) *Rosen-Hill collection page 26* Pam and Seth [Becky Hill] (A 4-face-4 with a star promenade) www.dancerhapsody.com/Calling/Dances.html#PamSeth Sweet Music for Guys [Becky Hill] (title says it all) *Rosen-Hill collection page 46* Through the Looking Glass [Cary Ravitz] (Star promenade broken up by a hey on either side) ravitz.cnc.net/dance/#tl Turning Joyce [Reine Wonite] (A star promenade/butterfly whirl leading immediate into another star promenade/butterfly whirl) www.fussell.org/bacds/bios/reine_dances.htm#joyce Twirling at the Altar [Steve Zakon-Anderson] (Butterfly whirl to diagonal hey) arcserve.astro.washington.edu/dances/ Whirlybirds on Hyperdrive [Bob Isaacs] (A tricky dance that has butterfly whirl-> Mary Cay's thing in the center) -Chris Page San Diego
