There shouldn't be any need to change directions.  When staying in a group of 
four the Petronellas set up an allemande L, but the Petronella 1 1/2 changes 
groups and does flow into the allemande R.  Your hands may want to go L, but 
the feet will want to keep going L.  another dance that relies on this in a 
different way is Tom Hinds' Revolution Reel, where the Petronella 1 1/2 goes 
into a gypsy R.
