To John and All;

You bring up some interesting points about teaching this dance and shadows in
general. Of course, anytime there is a shadow dancers are going out of the
minor set, so a dance like this should be avoided with a largely beginner
crowd. Sometimes it is useful to identify a shadow at the beginning of a
walkthrough, but since there are two shadows here, I avoided that. Instead, I
identified them as their "chain shadow" and "star shadow." When they faced on
the L diagonal in B1, I also avoided any mention of them - at that point, I
wanted the dancers to only think of their partner. In general, I am more
inclined to do a second walkthrough with shadows to emphasize their recurring
nature.

The give and take figure doesn't give any flow, but since it can go to either
side and to partners or neighbors, it is a very useful figure. It also allows
a caller to vary the programming by swapping out of the common figures circle L
3/4 (if going to the gent's side) and gents allemande L 1 1/2 (to lady's side).
Best of all, it gives the caller a chance to teach it with some colorful
language. I use terms such as "play hard to get" for those crossing the set,
and "turn on the charm" for those on the receiving side. Anyone else have some
good lines for this one?

occasional caller, I've had little success calling give and take dances. The
give and take moves people away from being across from another couple and into
a kind of zigzag formation. Newcomers and dancers with poor awareness of where
they are supposed to be invariably choose the wrong couple for the next move. >

identify their shadow, then the couple to the right of that for who to do the
diagonal right and left through with. The dancers will still be the zigzag
formation after the R&L through. I'd ask them to identify the couple that did
not include their partner to star with. > > I would like some feedback as to

better/simpler way to teach that> > John Nance> From: [email protected]>

As far as I know, the passing your partner on a L diagonal R and L through is
new.> > Roger Auman is a longtime dancer and up-and-coming caller from
