Hi Rickey, Having just called this last week in San Francisco, I can confirm that I've seen it both ways you describe. I normally have both the women's and men's line balance as left and right, just so it's consistent. Another variant I see is that at the end of the gent's allemande, some gents don't want to do the balance at all and just go swing their neighbor. I personally feel this looses the nicety of the line-of-4 wave (which is how I learned it), but what's-a-caller-to-do? I use reminder nudges by occaisionally re-calling just the "find your neighbor going into a wave and balance" line, but eventually you just let the dancers dance, yes?
