In the end, it doesn't really matter which star you go to -- you just find your partner on the correct side for a swing after the star. That makes it a nice, resilient dance.
I was at a weekend where the caller (Bob Isaacs) pointed this out, and challenged dancers to see how big or small the stars could get. I was sitting out, but I think there were instances of stars of ten to eleven people at times.
