I always try to include at least a couple of squares and a mixer of some sort, circle or scatter, in my contra evenings. I also often include 4 face 4 dances as well as other formations. The details vary from time to time and depend in part on the crowd. I like to throw in a proper contra now and then to keep the dancers on their toes, so to speak.
Of course, when I'm leading English country dances I have a lot more variations in formation to choose from and usually half of the evenings dances will be in something other than duple.
