I don't think that's true.  There is /some/ variety in what you'll
find at a dance advertised in the united states as a "contra dance",
but not that much.

Usually people running a dance who want a term that they can have mean
what they want it to mean choose a different term.  Perhaps: "barn
dance", "hoedown", "community dance", "family dance", "technocontra".
