does anybody have favorite intermediate to eXpert-level diagonal dances
they'd be compelled to share?

One of my favorites, which I haven't seen mentioned yet by anyone else, is The Dancing Sailors by Ed Shaw.

The Dancing Sailors
Ed Shaw
duple proper

1 - actives down the outside on their own sides,
    go below 2 couples
2 - come back up the center and cast off
3-4 contra corners
5-6 hey for 4 on the left diagonal, actives start by
passing right shoulders in the center
7-8 actives balance and swing, end facing up

The actives dance the hey with their second corners and the inactives will not be partners, but will be trail-buddies

Q: How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?
A: It depends on what dance you call!
