I had a wooden box custom made, and I carry it in a little canvas tote just the right size that I happened to find at a flea market (it has little pianos on it!). But I don't think it would solve your quantity question. There ARE some index card size cardboard storage drawers that can (still, I think) be obtained at some stationery supply places, and if you made a bag for it, it would become portable. I always thought those were very attractive boxes, in an old-fashioned sort of way.
