The Oxford English Dictionary gives both pronunciations for "gimbal" with the 
"soft" g first:  

/ˈdʒɪmbəl/ /ˈɡɪmbəl/

I followed their etymology trail, and it seems to ultimately come from a word 
meaning "twin."
