Fax detect in this case is required because there is a different call
path for voice calls. I showed it in case it was relevant. All I'm
trying to verify is that I'm not missing something obvious in the
sip.conf or the dialplan. Glancing at the logs and debug messages it
isn't even trying to switch to T.38 it just continues in ulaw. The udptl
debug on gives absolutely no messages so I'm assuming it's something
silly that I missed. Once I've verified that everything looks normal on
the configuration side I will dive into the logs with our provider. No
crystal ball required... just a nod of the head would suffice. ;)

you don't need faxdetext to receive faxes.
you can RxFAX and it will switch to t38 for you.

More: we don't know nothing about what's happening there: this means 
that without any log, our crystal ball doesn't help.
