NBC’s prime-time coverage of the Beijing Olympics wrapped up Sunday night with
an average audience of 27.7 million viewers and an 8 percent bump in Nielsen
ratings from the 2004 Athens Games.
The Nielsen average rating of 16.2 with a 28 share for U.S. TV households was
up from 15.0/26 for Athens. Viewership was up 13 percent from 24.6 million for
the Athens Games..
Pending final results for the Sunday night Closing Ceremony show, NBC attracted
at least 211 million total viewers for its over-the-air and cable broadcasts.
That broke the record of 209 million for the 1996 Athens Games as the
most-watched event in U.S. TV history.
“This audience record is something I thought I’d never see again, but what
really satisfied me is the way in which these Olympics truly captivated and
seemed to inspire our country,” said Dick Ebersol, chairman of NBC Sports.
“For me, the greatest measure of success at an Olympics is the number of
messages I receive from parents of young kids who have fallen in love with the
Olympics. That child means more to me than anything, because I think a love
affair with the Olympics is the greatest in all of sports.”
Sunday’s show averaged 15.2/24, up from 11.9/20 from the Athens finale. In
Houston, the program on KPRC (Channel 2) averaged a 13.1 rating and 21 share.
NBC also recorded 75.5 million video streams totaling 9.9 million hours for
live or on-demand replays at NBCOlympics.com, with 51.9 million unique users
and 1.24 billion page views.
