In criminal and civil complaints, Mr. Madoff is quoted as saying the losses could amount to $50 billion. "This is a real tragedy," Mr. Madoff's attorney, Ike Sorkin, said Friday. "We're going to fight through these events and do what we can to minimize the loss."
