Vietnam to accelerate cooperation agreements with US.

Washington D.C. (VNA) – Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai paid a working

cooperation agreements reached during the US visit by PM Nguyen Tan Dung last
June. While in the US , the Deputy PM met with US Secretary of State Condolezza

and former Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky, among other US

groups and corporations at a meeting held by the US-ASEAN Business Council and
the US Chamber of Commerce, and met Deputy Managing Director of the
International Monetary Fund Takatoshi Kato.He also visited the Susquehanna
nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania state.
At his meetings with US officials, Deputy PM Hai briefed them of Vietnam ’s
socio-economic situation, and plans for future development, especially
solutions to curb inflation and stabilise macro economy in the context of the
global economic-financial turmoil. He expressed his delight at the rapid
development of the bilateral relations over the recent time, particularly in
trade and investment. He said his visit was aimed to step up the implementation
of high-level agreements made during the PM Dung’s visit, including the setting
up of working missions for granting the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP)
status to Vietnam and recognising the country’s market economy, and
negotiations for the Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT), as well as cooperation
in environment and education. Deputy PM Hai said the two countries should
further enhance the bilateral ties, taking economic-trade cooperation as focal
point and impulse. He suggested that the US soon grant Vietnam with the GSP
status in order to expand the trade relations between the two countries.
Vietnam respects and wishes to develop the partnership with the US in line with
the high-level joint statements and to meet the desire of the two peoples, he
stressed.
US officials appreciated the Deputy PM’s visit to boost bilateral relations and
broaden mutual understanding. They said the two countries’ rapport has been
developing and they believed that the new US Government would continue the
policy to expand its ties with Vietnam in the future. They agreed that the two
countries should keep the rapid pace of the development of bilateral ties,
intensify exchange of delegations and work out appropriate solutions for
outstanding problems. They also said the US would continue consideration of the
GSP status for Vietnam and wished that the two sides would soon reach
agreements on relevant procedures. Many US businesses showed their interest in
doing business in Vietnam .
Earlier, Deputy PM Hai and his entourage attended a macroeconomic management
policy exchange programme held in the Harvard University in Boston city,
Massachusetts state.

Well said Jay,
John McCain did his best to try to win US presidency for the Republicans,
but he lost to the majority. I admire his courage to carry his messages to the
end, nevertheless Americans rejected him.
We should all accept the result and do what we can to help bring America
back on its foot. I am a registered Republican and I share most of its
principles, however, I have voted for a change in the past two elections-- for
John Kerry and Barack Obama. I am positive I am not the only one who have
crossed the party line to vote for a change. Millions others did as well. One
party ruling for too long always bring unfavorable results.
I don't believe that Obama is a socialist or a communist as accused by some
people

Also posted at www.modernprogressivekhmer.blogspot.comRemember the feeling of
love and proud of America you had after the9/11 attack. That was the kind of
feeling I had after America electedits new president. As I was anxiously
waiting for the president electto give his speech, I was very proud of Sen.
McCain who did his verybest in what was an up hill battle for his concession
remark earlier.I thought Sen. McCain was very gracious in his remark and was
true tohimself in recognizing this amazing moment in American history.Although
I was disappointed in his campaign in the way in which it wasconducted, Sen.
McCain ended his campaign with a high note for which Iwill always respect the
senator for his straight talks, independentspirit, and for being a true
American hero. The president elect was remarkable in his own way when he
delivered asobering remark as he recognized the challenges America is
facing. Thus far, American lost 1.2 million jobs, and the unemployment rate
isthe highest in 14 years at 6.5%. The housing crisis impacts everycommunity.
Cambodian Americans are not immune to this problem. Iknow of friends and
relatives who had to walk away from their homesfor which they worked hard to
buy for their families.Politically speaking, the country is ready for change.
After eightyears of the republican administration and six years of the
republicanCongress, the country was overwhelmingly voted for change.
WithPresident George W. Bush’s approval rate is at 28% only better thanthat of
Richard Nixon at 24% in the 70s, the electoral votes werelopsided with 364
votes for Sen. Barrack Obama and 163 votes for Sen.John McCain. Sen. Obama
only needed 270 votes to win.My eyes were sweltering with tear as I witnessed
this special momentof history. The notion that any one regardless of his/her
background, race, and religious belief can aspire and obtain to the highest
officein the nation moved me in a profound way that words cannot describe. My
young son asked me what the meaning of Sen. Obama being elected aspresident
was. I told him that this election gives all minoritieshope and inspiration.
I often told my son that although we areminorities in this country, the sky is
the limit. My words are muchtruer today than they are before the election. As I
worked the precincts and knocked on doors encouraging people togo out to vote,
I could not help but admiring the genius of Americanpolitical system. The
notion that Americans have an opportunity tochange their leaders every four
years and that the transition of poweris done in a peaceful manner gives me
hope and inspiration thatperhaps some day Cambodia will adopt term limit and
will have a chanceto participate in the truly free and fair election.America
has come a long way. For this reason, I love America evenmuch
more.<BR_________________________________________________________________
