Friends I was just chatting with Noy Shoung, Deputy Secretary General at www.NiDA.gov.kh <http://www.nida.gov.kh/>. Every day he translates at least 500 words on key voluntary projects that help all Cambodians. Noy is working tirelessly to translate the operating system and software for the OLPC XO computer. When the job is done OLPC will send some 4000 laptops to Cambodia which will go a long way in helping young Cambodians attain a better education. The XO is a computer that cannot be denied... but it is not about being a computer... it is about bringing innovative learning to kids... kids not adults... for adults Noy is again working hard to localise the #1 Linux distribution Ubuntu... many of us are big fans of Ubuntu as it is a very well thought out Linux variant, easy to install, easy to use, well supported and robust in all ways. no wonder it is the most widely used of all Linux distributions... Noy is also a big supporter of open communities translating www.joomla.orgthe world's leading FOSS based content management system. When I refer to open communities I really mean open... the projects are not owned by the translators, instead if you join with Noy and others you will be volunteering for Cambodians - all Cambodians... that is the spirit of sharing and caring that comes with FOSS, Noy does not take credit for the software yet he like all of you will sleep better at night when you know that Cambodian kids will have a chance to learn on an innovative computer and Cambodian adults can access a leading Linux operating system in their own language. Please contat Noy at "Noy Shoung" <[email protected]>, to learn how to get online and help Cambodia... If you wish to get on the Joomla localization team contact "John Khim" <[email protected]>, who organizes weekly Joomla localization meetings every Sunday near Wat Phnom. Happy New Year and hope to see you putting some of your free time to helping Cambodians grow, care and share through ICT... Technical skills are not necessary... just ability to translate from English to Khmer... all work is done online and individuals get full credit for the work they do.
