It was about Vietnam invasion of Cambodia in 1979, that the Chinese went to punish the Vietnamese through a short invasion in North Vietnam. Here are the facts: 1. April 1975 The Vietnamese occupied Koh Tral and other Cambodian islands in the gulf of Siam. 2. May 4, 1975 Khmer Rouge attacked Vietnamese islands. Jan. 4, 1976 Serious fighting erupts on Tral Island or Phu Quoc ( Ships carried red flags with pictures of Angkor Wat temple and white flags are shot at by people on Tral Island. ) 3.Dec. 25, 1978 Invasion of Cambodia. Some 100,000 Vietnamese with 20,000 KUFNS troops, under the direction of Gen. Van Tien Dung, launch an invasion of Cambodia. 4. Jan. 7, 1979 Vietnamese and KUFNS troops capture Phnom Penh.and on Jan. 8, 1979,The Kampuchean People's Revolutionary Council (KPRC), head by Heng Samrin was set up as a provisional govt. to run the country. On Jan. 10, 1979 The People's Republic of Kampuchea (PRK) was established to replace the Khmer Rouge's Democratic Kampuchea. 5. CHINA WENT TO WAR . Feb. 17, 1979, "Teaching a lesson". Some 170,000 Chinese troops with 700 warplanes, and 250-300 tanks launched an invasion of Vietnam to punish it for invading of Cambodia. Nov. 14, 1979 The UN General Assembly adopts a resolution A/RES/34/22 calling for the immediate withdrawal of all foreign troops from Cambodia. The vote is 91-21 with 29 abstentions. Feb. 27, 1982 UN Commission on Human Rights meeting in Geneva adopted a resolution condemning Vietnam’s occupation of Cambodia as a violation of Cambodian human rights. The vote was 28 in favor, 8 against, and 5 abstentions. Oct. 21, 1986 The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution /RES/41/6, by vote of 116-21 with 13 abstentions, calling for a withdrawal of Vietnamese forces from Cambodia. As of today,Cambodia is still occupied by the Vietnamese troops despite the call from the US president to Vietnam to cease her occupation of Cambodia since 1988. Friday, March 20, 2009 Vietnam Vietnam to set up hot line with China Vietnam's President Nguyen Minh Triet meet visiting Chinese State Councillor Dai Bingguo in Hanoi Thursday Vietnam and China have officially agreed to set up a hot line between leaders of the two countries, Vietnam's foreign ministry said Friday. The signing of a protocol on establishment of the hot line came after a meeting between visiting Chinese State Councillor Dai Bingguo and Vietnam's foreign minister Pham Gia Khiem in Hanoi Thursday, officials said. A top Vietnamese communist party member reached the agreement to establish the hot line last June during a tour of China. Both sides also agreed to focus on solving sea border issues and to "work closely to overcome difficulties" during the global economic slowdown, the ministry said Friday. They "agreed to further focus their talks on sea issues to maintain peace and stability...aiming for basic, sustainable and acceptable solutions," it said. Vietnam's foreign ministry said two-way trade with China hit a record high of more than $20 billion last year despite the global economic crisis. Both sides will strive to raise that figure to $25 billion by 2010 while gradually balancing two-way trade, it said. Vietnam also said China would grant it $300 million in loans at preferential conditions.
