Au cours d’une session parlementaire, avant de prendre la tête de la diplomatie thaïlandaise, il avait qualifié Hun Sen de « Nak Leng » (« voyou » en khmer), puis de « Suparb Burut Jai Nak Leng » (« gentilhomme au cœur de voyou »). « En fait, par “Nak Leng”, je voulais dire “cœur de lion”, affirme Kasit Piromya. J’ai utilisé ces termes pour vous témoigner mon admiration et mon respect. » « Veuillez m’excuser pour cet incident non intentionnel et ce malentendu », poursuit le ministre thaïlandais à l’attention de Hun Sen, avant d’estimer que « rien n’empêche les deux pays d’entretenir une relation amicale ».
