China's FM calls Clinton, expresses concern over Chinese victims in U.S.

BEIJING, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi made a
phone conversation with his U.S. counterpart Hillary Clinton on Sunday,
expressing concerns over Chinese nationals killed and injured in Friday's
Binghamton shooting rampage.
According to preliminary investigation results, four Chinese women were
among the people killed in the shooting and another Chinese national was
injured.
The American Civic Association is cordoned off in Binghamton, New York, the

FOR THE FOUR CHINESE KILLED BY A VIETNAMESE ?
"This was a very serious incident and the Chinese government is deeply
concerned about it," Yang said.
"We grieve over the death of the Chinese nationals and other victims, and
our condolences go to the injured people as well as the victims' families," he
said.
China hopes the United States will properly handle the matters concerning
the Chinese victims, offer immediate medical treatment to the injured Chinese,
and provide the victims' families with timely and sufficient assistance as well
as convenience to get visas to America, Yang said.
The Chinese Embassy and the Consulate-General in New York are both making
urgent contacts with the U.S. side over the issue, he added.
Yang also urged the U.S. to take necessary measures to ensure the safety of
the Chinese nationals and their properties in the United States.
Clinton, for her part, extended condolences to the Chinese victims and
their families.
She said the shooting was a tragedy and investigations have been underway
into the cause.
The United States will be serious with China's requests, she said, pledging
all efforts to offer medical treatment to the injured Chinese and to provide
the victims' families with timely and comprehensive assistance to get visas to
her country.
Thirteen people were killed and four others wounded Friday in the shooting
spree by a lone gunman at an immigrant services centre in downtown Binghamton,
New York.
Binghamton Mayor Matthew Ryan described the shooting as "a tragedy that
affects many different people from many different countries and their families
and friends."
There have been inquires from nine different countries and two different
consulates, Ryan told a press conference.
4 Chinese nationals among dead in New York state shooting
BINGHAMTON, United States, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Four Chinese nationals were
among the people killed Friday in a shooting spree by a lone gunman at an
immigrant services centre in downtown Binghamton, New York, a Chinese diplomat
said Saturday.
Deputy Consul General Shi Yong said Binghamton police notified the Chinese
Consulate-General in New York that four Chinese nationals were among those
killed in Friday's shooting. Their identities were being established and could

Families Bury Binghamton, N.Y. Shooting Victims; New Details Emerge About
Gunman.

Binghamton, N.Y., police released these undated photos of Jiverly Wong, the
gunman who killed 13 and himself on April 3.2009.
As families began burying their loved ones Sunday, more details emerged about
the man who gunned down 13 people at a Binghamton, N.Y., community center
before turning the gun on himself.
Police Chief Joseph Zikuski said 41-year-old Jiverly Wong had recently visited
a firing range, but stressed that he doesn't know why Wong went on a shooting
spree at the American Civic Association, or if he had a particular target.
The chief said the victims might have been picked at random.

Wong first came to the northwestern New York town some time in the late 1980s
or early 1990s, before moving to California, Zikuski said. In 1992, Wong was
arrested and convicted of fraud.
Police said Wong became an American citizen in November of 1995 and sometime
after that left the country. He returned to Los Angeles Dec. 25, 1999, arriving
from Tokyo, police said passport records showed.
After failing to report for work in July of 2007, Wong turned up in Binghamton,
where he received a New York State drivers license, police said.
Wong was married, and later divorced while living in California, said Zikuski.
Authorities said they are trying to contact his ex-wife, but declined to
disclose her name.
All of the victims in the deadly shooting have been identified and the
community is now beginning a long healing process, officials said.

"We are a nonviolent community and it's time to come together and heal," said
Binghamton Mayor Matthew Ryan. "Our prayers and sympathies go out to everyone
effected by this and we will do everything we can to heal this community.
Broome County District Attorney Gerald F. Mollen said Sunday a faster response
by emergency officials wouldn't have saved any additional lives.
"We can definitely say no one was shot after the police arrival," Mollen said.
"Nobody could have been saved if the police walked in the door that first
minute."
Mollen said his office came to this conclusion after reviewing numerous
reports, including police and autopsy information.
Zikuski said a review of calls shows police officers were at the scene five
minutes before the receptionist's call. Police had earlier reported that it was
that call which brought police to the immigration center.
A police commando team entered the building at 11:13 a.m. Friday, 43 minutes
after the first call to police.
