*Session on Economic and Development in Southeast Asia *



*This project seeks to enhance the knowledge base and academic skills of
junior Cambodian academics and researchers in the fields of humanities and
social sciences. This will be achieved through weekly seminars, research
project and workshops.*



CKS is seeking applications from those wishing to participate in the
six-month session entitled "Economic and Development in Southeast Asia",
lasting from *November 2009 – April, 2010*. The session will focus on the
following theme:



*This course ground**s students in the major trends and disciplines of
economic and development studies within the Southeast Asian contexts. The **
course explore**s the complex and multidimensional of global and local
economic factors links to development of different country in Southeast
Asia, particularly of those in Mainland Southeast Asia. **It introduces a
broad overview of the key issues of global and local economy and
development, ranging from theoretical and historical perspective**s through
to the examination of current trends of development.** Development issues of
Cambodia will be emphasized within the context of Southeast Asia to identify
commonality and diversity throughout the course. Major topics will include:*
* **global**ization, commercialization, **p**overty**/**m**arginalization**,
** equity, **g**ender**, empowerment, participation, and the role of
institutions in development.*

Participants must be Cambodian nationals with a good command of English, who
are currently employed as junior faculty members in a local university, or
who intend to pursue an academic career in Cambodia.



Applicants should provide copies of their educational transcripts and
certificates, evidence of English level, an individual research proposal
with comparative dimension between Cambodia and other countries in the
region, and evidence of their university employment. Those not currently
teaching at a university should provide a signed statement concerning their
career plans. An Academic Committee will review all applications.

*How to Apply*

With your application for this session, please include a short research
proposal of 3 or 5 pages, which could form the basis for 2 to 3 months of
individual or group research. The research should lead to an English paper
of approximately 4,000 to 6,000 words that you could present in a seminar or
workshop. Your proposal should include:



   - A title of no more than 12 words
   - 2 or 3 main research questions
   - A brief discussion of the issue or problem you wish to research
   - Some explanation as to how you propose to conduct the research
   - Some possible conclusions or recommendations



*Examples* of possible approaches might include:



·         a detailed study of some aspect of a neighboring country, using
mainly internet sources and newspaper reports

·         a comparative study of an issue affecting Cambodia and another
Southeast Asian country, using some fieldwork interviews or surveys



Your research proposal will help us understand your own special field of
interest.
