So far the Vietnamese have had great success in putting in place a Cambodian government that works like a charm to fit their short and long term goal. The price of their investment ( the death of 50,000 soldiers) is just a small change in their pocket and it is and will be priceless for the future of the Vietnamese people. God know how many Cambodians have died at the hand of Viet soldiers. Cambodia is slipping very fast to become a part of Indochina Federation. Meanwhile Cambodians are still divided and actively persueing in a much lesser important matters. Both members (most if not all) of the ruling party and the oppositions have not put Cambodia's national interest first. ========== In a message dated 10/8/2009 5:39:32 P.M. Vietnamese, not Khmer, leaders realized, they would have to end their military presence in Cambodia. The United States and its Asian allies have cut off or severely limited economic ties with Vietnam which add serious problem to Vietnam's internal economic problems because of its occupation of Cambodia. Lt. Gen. Le Kha Phieu, the former deputy commander in chief of Vietnamese forces in Cambodia, told a press conference in 1989 that 55,000 Vietnamese troops had died in the Cambodian conflict since 1977. As late as 2008, there was still effort to repatriate the remains of Vietnamese invaders who killed on Cambodian soil. Vietnam got involved in Cambodia primarily for Vietnamese reasons -- just as it was getting out primarily for Vietnamese reasons.
