WASHINGTON -- In the end, satisfied that the House health care reform bill
would not subsidize abortions, Rep. Anh "Joseph'' Cao, R-New Orleans, voted
"yes" late Saturday night, making him the only Republican in the House to vote
for a bill that passed 220-215. Cao also was the only member of Louisiana's
seven-member House delegation to support the Democratic plan.

Why Has Obama Refused to Honor the Fall of Berlin Wall Anniversary?
Strong Resolution on Cambodia Human Rights Abuses
Feb. 27, 1982 : UN Commission on Human Rights meeting in Geneva adopted a
resolution condemning Vietnam’s occupation of Cambodia as a violation of
Cambodian human rights. The vote was 28 in favor, 8 against, and 5 abstentions.
Oct. 21, 1986 The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution A/RES/41/6, by vote
of 116-21 with 13 abstentions, calling for a withdrawal of Vietnamese forces
from Cambodia.
Is President Obama just playing petty politics and not wanting to lend his
presence to an event which is seen as a victory for a Republican President?
For decades the Berlin Wall separated Communist East Germany from Democratic
West Germany, and prevented the free flow of peoples, trade and ideas. But it
was also a symbol of tyranny.
The people on the Eastern side of the Berlin Wall were serfs to an all-powerful
state, with no control over their own destiny and no ability to change those
who ruled them. The people on the Western side of the Berlin Wall were free.
Their economies thrived, they traded and traveled throughout the world, they
created their own government and chose their leaders. It was as if one side of
the wall were in black and white and the other side in Technicolor.
Twenty years ago when the wall came down it signaled the dawn of a new era for
the people of Eastern Europe and, ultimately, the Soviet Union. It was the
harbinger of the defeat of communism and the restoration of basic human rights
to hundreds of millions of people. It was the ultimate expression of people
breaking free from their chains of bondage. And America, especially President
Reagan, was instrumental in bringing it about.
So why has President Obama refused to honor the occasion? The excuse that he’s
too busy preparing for his upcoming trip to Asia rings hollow. It’s like the
girl who tells a guy she can’t go out with him because she’s got to stay home
and wash her hair. Clearly Obama just doesn’t want to go.
What’s behind the decision?
Is President Obama just playing petty politics and not wanting to lend his
presence to an event which is seen as a victory for a Republican President?
Is President Obama just too young to realize the momentous significance of the
fall of the Berlin Wall? He was born in 1961; when the Wall went up Obama was
an infant. His youth was spent in Indonesia and Hawaii, far from the struggles
between the Democratic West and Communist East. He probably didn’t practice
civil defense drills at school; fallout shelters weren’t part of his
childhood; pictures of mushroom clouds weren’t burned into his consciousness at
an early age.
Or is President Obama just naive? Is he a no-show in Germany because he wants
to offer the Russians yet another goodwill gesture, on the heels of the one he
offered just a few weeks ago when he cancelled the planned missile shield for
Poland and Czech Republic? With these two goodwill gestures Obama is in
essence telling the countries of Eastern Europe -- you’re on your own. We are
no longer standing with you against Russian expansionism. He is in essence
telling the Russians they can reclaim those countries back into their sphere of
influence.
Some have implied Obama is offering these goodwill gestures so the Russians
will reciprocate by helping us stop Iran’s nuclear program, and cooperate and
in possible sanctions against Iran. The Russians scoffed at the mere mention
of sanctions against Iran.
Whether it is petty politics, or historical ignorance or naivete, it’s wrong.
President Obama should be in Berlin, along with other world leaders,
celebrating the birth of freedom for hundreds of millions of people.

Dismantling America
by Thomas Sowell
Just one year ago, would you have believed that an unelected government
official, not even a Cabinet member confirmed by the Senate but simply one of
the many "czars" appointed by the President, could arbitrarily cut the pay of
executives in private businesses by 50 percent or 90 percent?
Did you think that another "czar" would be talking about restricting talk
radio? That there would be plans afloat to subsidize newspapers-- that is, to
create a situation where some newspapers' survival would depend on the
government liking what they publish?

Jeb Bush: Obama trying to 'attack capitalism'
Posted: October 29th, 2009 04:53 PM ET
>From CNN Political Producer Peter Hamby
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush spoke in Washington on Wednesday.
WASHINGTON (CNN) – Since his brother left office in January, former Florida
Gov. Jeb Bush has been mostly diplomatic when discussing the Obama
administration.
On Wednesday, he took a sharper tone.
During remarks to a U.S. Chamber of Commerce legal summit in Washington, Bush
had tough words for the president in response to an audience question.
"I think President Obama has used the bully pulpit as a way to attack
capitalism," he said, according to LegalNewsline.com.
Bush paused a moment, then acknowledged: "That'll make the news."

Fox Wars
by Charles Krauthammer
10/23/2009
Rahm Emanuel once sent a dead fish to a live pollster. Now he's put a horse's
head in Roger Ailes' bed.
Not very subtle. And not very smart. Ailes doesn't scare easily.
The White House has declared war on Fox News. White House communications
director Anita Dunn said that Fox is "opinion journalism masquerading as news."
Patting rival networks on the head for their authenticity (read: docility),
senior adviser David Axelrod declared Fox "not really a news station." And
Chief of Staff Emanuel told (warned?) the other networks not to "be led (by)
and following Fox."
Meaning? If Fox runs a story critical of the administration -- from exposing
White House czar Van Jones as a loony 9/11 "truther" to exhaustively examining
the mathematical chicanery and hidden loopholes in proposed health care
legislation -- the other news organizations should think twice before following
the lead.
President Obama should fire White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and hire me
as his top adviser. Don't laugh. I can almost guarantee higher poll numbers for
the president if he brings me on board.
The first thing I would do is declare a truce with Fox News. Right now, the
president is spending more time launching offensives against FNC than against
the Taliban. The American people want Osama bin Laden's head on a stick, not
Glenn Beck's. What exactly does attacking FNC get the president? Plus, it's
hypocritical. Didn't Barack Obama win the Nobel Peace Prize?
Next, I would suggest that the commander-in-chief actually listen to his top
general in Afghanistan and his secretary of defense. After listening, the
president would immediately send 40,000 more troops to provide additional
security in that God-forsaken place. As a trusted adviser, I would remind the
president that the United States military is a vital enterprise and deserves a
chance to win in Afghanistan.
