PHNOM PENH — Both Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet and Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni share a common view of strengthening and developing the relationship between the two neighbouring countries. In talks yesterday in Phnom Penh, the visiting Vietnamese head of state and his host agreed that the tradition of friendship between the two countries was an invaluable asset, significant to national reconstruction in each country and contributing to peace, stability, co-operation and development in the region and the world. Norodom Sihamoni welcomed Triet on his first official visit to Cambodia since becoming President last year, calling the visit an important event that opened a new stage of development in the multifaceted co-operation between the two countries. Sihamoni conveyed regards from his father, former king Norodom Sihanouk, and his mother Monineath Sihanouk, and he recalled his own visit to Viet Nam in March of last year. He expressed appreciation for the support and assistance of the Vietnamese State and people to the Cambodian Royal Family and government. Triet responded by reaffirming Viet Nam’s consistent policy of respect and willingness to develop relations with neighbouring countries. He expressed his gratitude to the Cambodian King and royal family, and the government and people of Cambodia, for their support to the Vietnamese people. Both Sihamoni and Triet agreed that a visit by a high-level Vietnamese delegation at the same time the two countries were preparing for the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations on June 26 was part of the celebrations for the event. Triet invited Sihamoni to visit Viet Nam next year, and the king accepted the invitation. Triet also held separate talks in Phnom Penh yesterday with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, Senate President Chea Sim, and National Assembly Chairman Heng Samrin. The Cambodian leaders called Triet’s official visit a demonstration of the two countries’ determination to increase comprehensive co-operation. Expressing delight at the developments in the two countries’ economic ties and trade, they suggested that the Vietnamese President should encourage more businesspeople to invest in Cambodia. They noted the co-ordinated effort to settle land border issues and affirmed to go forward with the work of demarcating the border and complete the planting of land border markers by 2008, as well as delineating the two countries’ water areas with the aim of building a common borderline of peace and long lasting stability. The Cambodian leaders expressed thanks to Viet Nam’s Party, State, Government and people for assisting the Cambodian people to escape from genocide as well as helping reconstruct the country. "The Cambodian people have always been grateful to the Vietnamese people’s valuable assistance, especially the help of Vietnamese volunteers," Prime Minister Hun Sen said."Without Viet Nam’s help, there would be no present-day Cambodia. The most valuable thing is that Viet Nam has helped Cambodia revive." Hun Sen also thanked Triet for his support for the agreements reached by the nations’ Prime Ministers regarding co-operation in building Highway 18, developing hydroelectric power plants, and planting rubber in Cambodia. Triet said he was glad to see co-operation agreements between the two countries being implemented actively. He hailed the signing of a supplementary treaty regarding the 1985 border demarcation treaty and the planting of the first border marker at Ba Vet-Moc Bai as events of significance and importance in the two countries’ histories and called for concerted efforts to complete the border marker planting on time. Yesterday, the President also laid wreaths at the Independence and Cambodia-Viet Nam Friendship monuments. — VNS Sathonne Chhim Timothychhim.blogspot.com http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=&search_query=timothy+chhim&aq=f -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Cambodia Discussion (CAMDISC) - www.cambodia.org" group.
