Subject: Sochua not jailed

Dear all,

On behalf of the Cambodian Grassroot Women's Movement, I would like to update
you on the events here:

Yesterday, it was officially announced that the Court would take the fine
amount from MP Mu Sochua's salary. This, however, only concerns the amount due
to PM Hun Sen (half of the fine). However, as Mu Sochua herself commented, it
is very doubtful that the government will take action by putting her in jail.
We are still waiting for a formal declaration on this.

Mu Sochua will continue her fight, now certainly from out of jail. As she
declared on an SRP Press conference on Thursday: “Today I would like to declare
war,” [...] “It is not a war of weapons; I declare war as a democrat against
the loss of morality and justice. I would like to tell people that the CPP must
be held accountable before the nation.”

Also, earlier in the week, High Commissioner Pillay made a public statement.
This is certainly one of the strongest positions she can take on any issue
given her limited powers. It is a victory!

We have been, and will continue, putting updates on Mu Sochua's blog:

A grassroot movement of Cambodian movement emerged out of this case, and
continues to grow. A Joint statement will be released early next week. Further,
a public meeting with Mu Sochua will be organized later in the week, and a
large gathering a few days later, where women's groups will be invited to
discuss, share their concerns, hopes, build networks, and become stronger
together.

We would like to keep you informed of this and for you to cover these news
through your channels. Please let me know if I can keep contacting you.

Warmest regards
Victoria on behalf of the Cambodian Grassroot Women's Movement.
