No show: Sir Sean Connery didn't appear in court as
requested by a judge investigating a disputed real estate deal known in Spain
as
the 'Goldfinger Case'
Sir Sean Connery failed to show up at a Costa del Sol court for questioning
over a disputed land deal today.

The former 007 claimed in a fax to the court he had not had time to prepare
for the long journey from his Bahamas home.

The investigating magistrate in charge of the case will now consider whether
to go ahead with an earlier threat to issue an international arrest warrant
against the 80-year-old actor.

However it is appears more likely that he would instead make a formal request
to speak with Connery at his home in the Caribbean.

A court worker, confirming the actor's no-show, said: 'Mr Connery has
informed the court in writing he won't be coming today. He has cited health
reasons and his advanced age and said he has not been able to prepare the
journey in time.

'The court is now considering its next move. The emission of an international
arrest warrant is a possibility but a remote one. The most likely scenario is
that the investigating magistrate will make a formal request through a rogatory
commission to question Sir Sean at his home.

'The logistics of this will become clearer next week. It could be that a
delegation goes to the Bahamas to quiz him. The other option would be that a
team based locally is tasked to interview him.'

Connery and his French-born wife Micheline Roquebrune had been summonsed to
Marbella's Investigating Court No 1 to answer questions about a land deal on
the
site of their former home in the resort.

Big news: The case relates to the sale of Connery's sea
front villa close to Puerto Banus, which was turned into seventy flats
The Scottish actor and his wife sold Casa Malibu in 1999 and it was
subsequently demolished.

More than 70 flats, later sold for an estimated £45million, were built in its
place despite planning regulations stipulating only five flats could be built
there.

More than 20 people, including former town hall officials and Connery's
lawyers, have been called to give evidence in private court hearings designed
to
determine if charges should be laid.

Goldfinger: The case has been named after Connery's 1964
Bond film
Since Connery was implicated in the probe in May following a police raid on
the offices of his Spanish-based lawyers, the case has been dubbed Goldfinger
after the 1964 Bond film in which he starred.

Sir Sean and his wife bought Casa Malibu after their wedding in 1975. They
entertained stars including Richard Burton, Michael Caine, Omar Shariff and
George Best in the magnificent whitewashed villla.

Michelle Roquebrune, Sir Sean's second wife, has previously claimed: 'We have
nothing to do with this. We sold the property and that is it.'

Sir Sean has already threatened reprisals over leaks linking him to the
criminal investigation.

In a furious letter forwarded to Ricardo Puyol earlier this month by
Britain's Ambassador to Spain, he warned he was considering legal action and
demanded to know what proof court officials have to support the suspicion he
may
have committed any wrongdoing.

The investigating magistrate had previously hinted he may issue an
international arrest warrant against Sir Sean and his wife if they failed to
attend today's court hearing.

He warned in a document leaked to local press that if they did not show their
faces: 'All legal means available under both national and international law can
be used to oblige them to appear.'
