Director Daniel Gordon and producer Nicholas Bonner - who made this screening possible – were granted permission from the North Korean film authorities to make the stunning documentary A STATE OF MIND (2004, 94 mins). The team follows two young gymnasts and their families for over eight months in the lead up to the so-called “Mass Games” - the biggest & most elaborate human performance on earth. 9PM: CROSSING THE LINE (2006) by Gordon/Bonner tells the story of “Comrade Joe”. Joseph Dresnok was the last US GI to defect to North Korea during the Cold War. He later found fame as an actor in propaganda films… SAT, 11/12 MEDIA STUDENTS FOCUS ON BIODIVERSITY AND CLIMATE CHANGE 7PM: “SEADocs – The Southeast Asian Student Documentary Award” was created by UNESCO, Goethe Institut and GTZ. This competition encourages the art of doc filmmaking in the region, using the medium of film and television as a platform to engage with pressing environmental issues. Tonight, the Department of Media and Communication (DMC) at Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) will screen a dozen short student films on Biodiversity and Climate Change. What does biodiversity mean to the filmmakers? What effects do they witness in their local environment related to changing climate patterns and the influence of human activities? Join our screening to find out… SUN, 12/12 OVERSEAS PRESS CLUB OF CAMBODIA PRESENTS THE FILM “FIXER” 7PM: A fixer is a person hired by foreign journalists to facilitate the gathering of news stories. Ian Olds’ documentary “FIXER: THE TAKING OF AJMAL NAQSHBANDI” (2009) follows the relationship between an Afghan interpreter and the American journalist Christian Parenti. This intimate portrait of two colleagues shifts dramatically when Ajmal is kidnapped along with an Italian reporter. What follows is the tragic story of one man forgotten in the crossfire: a brutal allegory of the proud land and perilous misadventure that is Afghanistan. After the viewing, the OPCC will hold a discussion with a journalist who has worked in Afghanistan along with two Cambodian fixers. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Cambodia Discussion (CAMDISC) - www.cambodia.org" group.
