Phishing, Flash Drives Put Your Information at Risk

As the holiday season draws near, please be particularly vigilant regarding
email greetings that appear to be from friends, family members, or colleagues,
and that contain electronic greeting cards (e-cards), links to websites within
such cards, or holiday games.

Hackers are using clever 'phishing' tactics during the holidays to get you to
click on links or attachments that can then infect your machine. Fake e-card
greetings, bogus messages that seem to originate from social networking site
messages such as facebook or hi5, and even shipment messages falsely claiming
you have a holiday package--are all common methods hackers are using to steal
your information.

Another tactic uses flash drives to spread viruses. Because USB drives or
thumb drives, are small, readily available, inexpensive, and extremely
portable, they are popular for storing and transporting files from one computer
to another. However, these same characteristics make them appealing to
attackers, who can store malicious programs on them that can infect your
computer.

  What You Can Do

The Office of Information Security has many mechanisms in place to protect
Bank systems. However, information security is a shared responsibility. You can
help by staying informed and aware.

Phishing: Be cautious when opening email attachments. Be alert, and be
suspicious of attachments or links in emails, even those that appear to be from
someone you know. Many malicious attachments appear to be Word or pdf files.
Beware if you receive an official-looking email coming from a commercial
account such as an AOL or gmail account. Also, do not forward these emails to
anyone.

Flash drives: Do not plug an unknown USB drive into your computer. If you
find a USB drive, do not plug it into your computer to view the contents or to
try to identify the owner. Give it to your IT staff person to examine.
