The Silvio Berlusconi show may be coming to an end.
As they say in French, “look for the lady,” and Milan prosecutors may have
finally found her.
There is some debate, however, about whether or not
you can call the woman in question, 18-year-old Moroccan Karima el-Mahroug, a
lady. She’s better known by her stage name of Ruby the Heartstealer.
Let’s just say she’s a dancer. That would be a nice
way of putting it. And despite her questionable professional qualifications,
Ruby would probably not be a big problem for the billionaire Italian Prime
Minister were it not for the fact that she’s only 18, and was underage when she
allegedly began frequently parties at Berlusconi’s home outside of Milan.
“Parties” might be a polite word for what prosecutors
contend were in fact huge sexfests, with dozens of young women performing for
Berlusconi and two of his associates, who are also under investigation.
While Berlusconi has denied all the accusations, and
claims he has never paid for sex, Milan prosecutors are building a case in
which
they claim “a significant number” of prostitutes found their way to private
parties at the 74-year-old Prime Minister’s home in exchange for money, gifts
and in some cases, rent-free apartments.
Frequenting prostitutes is not illegal in Italy if
they are adults, but it is if they are under the age of 18.
Berlusconi says investigators are politically
motivated and that he’s the victim of a relentless campaign orchestrated by
Italian leftists who want to bring him down.
He narrowly kept his government afloat in December,
but insists that Italy needs the continuity and stability that only he can
provide right now.
The opposition has called for Berlusconi to resign,
and the daily newspaper of the Italian bishops, Avvenire, used a front-page
editorial to describe a “devastating tornado that’s beating down not only on
the
Italian leader and a group of his friends and acquaintances, but on our
country’s international image.”
Berlusconi claims he’s totally serene despite the
uproar, and that he’s even “having fun.” That, of course, can be read a couple
of different ways.

between the nations grew.
