Kangaroo, thank you asking me this question. At the time of French arrival, Cambodian population had been only 1 and 1/2 million, because of hundred years of war and Khmer social disintegration or in other wards Social dividion due to Khmer anti- multi-ethnic culture. They had changed from Hinduism to Buddhism but the two are still mixing together making Khmer people believe everything misterious to them, They are affraid of falling astroids at nightime, dunderstorm, lightening, thick forest, mountains, even big and high trees, They did not know maleria they thought the making of Neak-Tah.
When French rubber plantation had asking for Khmer application for working in those fields, there were zero applicant. Then French had turned to Tonking for workers, and there were thousand more then they needed. This is the real fact. I am telling you today that Khmer are confused on religion, on politics even on English they have already learnt, as they are misundertood everything translated into Khmer though due Khmer language it self has not been upded to the so fast changing world. With my best regards from Neak -Kampuchea.
