Subject: FYI-districts and provinces in Thaialnd

Dear Michel,

When one reads names of villages, districts and provinces in Thaialnd, and if
the person is from Khmer background, he/she can find many Khmer names all over
the country, except the North.  Prachinburi, is a very old Khmer province,
meaning the western town..west of Angkor.
Many more  provincial and place names: Sra Keo, Cholaburi, Lopburi (Lovo,
Lavo), Nakorn (Nokor) Rajasima), Nakorn Phnom, Petchburin, Rajburi,  Cha Choeng
Sao, Sukhothai(ya) (Sikhodaya), Nokorn Pathom, Phitsanulok (Pisanulok), Sating
Prah (Stueng Preah), Chaiya (Jaya),  Muang Sing (Singahapura).  These names and
many more were mentioned in Khmer inscriptions during Angkor Empire.

IN Surin, most villages are still in Khmer names: ktom, svay, ponley, norea,
jek, kdat, yeang, etc.

Trad nd Chantaburi were exchanged for the return of Battambang and Sisophon
between Siam and France in 1904 and 1907.

As for the names of trees, it is true that the Siamese has retained many Khmer
names because the Siamese themselves were of Khmer-Mon (KHOM) stock too,
including the Chakri Dynasty.  The word KHOM is an abbreviation of Khmer +
Mon.  In Khmer and Mon writing, when you place Khand M together (KhM), it  can
be pronounced as "khom" without the need for O vowel in between.

For trees and plants in Cambodia, oour urgent need is to protect them from the
government destruction and capitalist greeds.  Biologists need to conduct a
comprehensive plant taxonomy urgently before this ecological wealth i lost
forever.  Cambodian forest contains among the largest biodiversity in the
world, but this is not valued by the Government and "investors".

Ecologically yours,

Supote
