Surya Subedi has a long-standing interest in human rights and more than 25 
years of experience in international law and human rights law in both developed 
and developing countries as a law practitioner, an academic, a diplomat, and a 
human rights activist. He is a Professor of International Law and 
Founding-Director of the Centre for International Governance at the University 
of Leeds, UK. 
 
At present, he is the UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights in Cambodia. He 
also is a member of a high level Human Rights Advisory Group of the UK 
Government chaired by the British Foreign Secretary. He is a Barrister in 
England and a member of the International Dispute Resolution Group at Tanfield 
Chambers in London.
 
After specialising in international law of human rights for his LLM at the 
University of Hull and in international law at Oxford University for his 
doctorate, he has taught international law and human rights law at a number of 
universities around the globe and published widely in this area. He was at the 
forefront of the international campaign to bring about democracy in Nepal 
during the autocratic royal rule of the country between 2005 and 2006 and 
coordinated international efforts on behalf of all major Nepalese political 
parties from London. When he was a student leader and human rights activist, he 
went to prison twice – in 1978 and then in 1979 - for fighting for democracy in 
Nepal.
