Letter from Congresswoman Maricar Zamora-Apsay from the Liberal Party
of the Philippines expressing her support to Cambodian opposition
leader Sam Rainsy's appeal for international parliamentary solidarity.
"It is the least that we can do to have the honor of appending our names to
the message of support for one of truth and freedom’s bravest advocates in
this era when many take it for granted. Sam Rainsy has been a staunch voice
of liberty and respect for human rights for Cambodia, and his struggle has
not gone unheard. The CALD [Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats
currently chaired by Sam Rainsy] has been instrumental not just in
giving me the
opportunity to bear witness to democracy at work in other countries, but to
also learn from our fellow Liberals such as Sam Rainsy. Rest assured that
we will exert efforts to elevate and echo his appeal.
We do pray that eventually, just like Aung Suu Kyi, Sam Rainsy will lead
his country despite the years of sacrifice, and that he may do so with our
support and vigilance. We trust that truth and independence will
eventually triumph over corruption, that free will and choice will bring
about true sovereignty. We join the call of all liberals for Sam Rainsy to
be allowed to return to Cambodia and to resume his parliamentary duties
without fear of reprisal or persecution, and to permit him to lead his
political party in their cause to better the well-being of the Cambodian
people."
