Dear fellow CAN members,****** Fresh insights by our colleague Davan Long greatly contribute to pave the way for more productive debate on “Our nation's backbone” among our CAN members. Two main points draw our special attention: ASEAN Economic Community and Cambodian human resources.**** I share with him the opinion that to benefit from ASEAN Economic integration, we should put extra efforts now to create a clear vision. Information sharing seminars or conferences on relevant topics should be conducted to identify specific needs and come up with workable action plan to address those needs. **** I think this kind of seminar or conference can be organized by our CAN members (it is primarily our task as academia). For example, “National Conference on Khmer Nation's Backbone” can be held sometime before Khmer New Year (2013). As one of the main organizers of the First International Conference on Khmer Studies in 1996, I can contribute to the realization of this project (For more information on this international conference, please visit my website: www.intered-institute.org).**** The second interesting point is on the chronic shortage of skilled labor, especially in the field of engineering, science and technology due to the fact that many of our young people prefer major in public administration, etc. **** Nowadays, major in Laws is their best choice. I think it is due to the burden of the past. Cambodian young people preferred public service. Please read an article in Khmer below and give your remarks on it. What does it mean for Cambodia, and more importantly is Cambodia ready for it? These are key questions that I hope will trigger some productive debate here.* *There is no doubt that AEC will profoundly change the way our nation conducts business internally and externally, and will affect our vulnerable economy and workforce in many ways; yet the full details of AEC remain vague to many of us. While some may rightly argue that the technicality of AEC is still very much a work-in-progress, it is nevertheless vital that our government put extra efforts now to create a clear vision and establish a framework that will allow the country to benefit from ASEAN’s integrating economy.* *Relevant government ministries should pro-actively and more frequently take initiatives to conduct information sharing seminars or conferences on the topic, and work closely with key stakeholders including leaders or representatives from local business, labor and academic/training groups to identify specific needs and come up with workable action plan to address those needs.* *Chronic shortage of skilled labor, especially in the field of engineering, science and technology, has been a major issue that keeps hampering our progress and regional competitiveness. The impacts of such shortage are likely to be much more pronounced in the context of integrating economy which is increasingly based on knowledge and know-how.* * As a side note, I have a hard time to understand why only few young people in Cambodia, whom I chatted with, actually study in engineering, science or technology, given that these disciplines offer very promising future for them and their community. Many of them prefer instead to major in public administration, finance, tourism, literature, art and philosophy. * *Is this a nationwide trend, and if so can some of you explain the reasons why young folks shy away from engineering, science and technology?
