Hi Perom!

I had red King Hoc Dy Vannsak's eulogy too before I engage to write on Vannsak
bio. I have a lot to say..

The birthday date by the written official Birthday is not the good one because
his father had to change it to make it different from the solar eclipse day.

Vannsak told me he was born on the solar eclipse day which had changed
consequently his life. He didn't know what day but he confirmed to me that it
was a total eclipse day according to his half-sister and his childhood cousin
who still live in Paris right now.

I check the date by Google it falls on that day 24 January, 1925.. Imagine the
total eclipse day which was very rare and fallen on the same Vannsak Birthday's
year. Didn't you find it amazing!!

I have a long story about his biologic father and his father's brother (uncle)
who fought with gun between brothers for the love of the same woman who was the
mother of Vannsak.

Vannsak has a half-sister, of the same father Sisowath Duong Leakhena alive
still live right now in Paris. It is she who reveals all the story to Vannsak.
I will write Vannsak's maybe of two or thee pages that'all. You know in the
Royal Palace, it is very often men of very high ranking rape woman. I thought
Vannsak's mom was raped by the two brothers. Vannsak admired so much his
mother.

And another cousin from his childhood alive and living in Paris confirms to him
the veracity of the story of his biologic father, Sisowth Duongleakhena.

Vannsak admired his father and said, when he saw his photo, he is a very
handsome.

Vannsak's mom has an other son from the brother of his father.

Neak Moneang CHEA Han, I believe, is not the reel name of Vannsak's mom, sure
it is the official one. But Neak Moneang CHEA Han must have a princess' name,
because she is a princess. She is a Yukunthor;s progenitor. Princess Malika
is Vannsak's aunt, according to Vannsak but he didn't know why until the
revelation of his half-sister, princess Sisowath Chanlekha.

I saw the photo of two chetdey one for his mom one for him.
The Lady told me it was in Pursat.
Because I would like to raise funds to build a big one for Vannsak.

I think King Hoc Dy knew the official story.

Vannsak told me his recent story and he asked me to write his bio.

Vannsak bequeathed a lot of documents to Mme Kungkea.

I thought it is she who shows me the Vannsak chetdey.

I am more interested in Political aspect of Vannsak life.

KingHoc Dy's eulogy for the late Prof. Keng Vannsak

Eulogy by King Hoc Dy
Former student of Prof. Keng Vannsak

My deepest respect to you, ladies and gentlemen, brothers, sisters,
relativesand friends who have come to attend [this funeral] today.

All of us would like to express our sympathy to the deceased's family.Professor
Keng Vannsak passed away on Thursday, December 18, leaving behindgrieving
family members, relatives, friends.

On behalf of the deceased's old students, friends and myself, I would like
topresent the biography and some activities of Professor Keng Vannsak,
whocontributed to the Cambodian community and the Cambodian nation in the
arts, culture and research on Khmer civilization in Cambodia and in France.

He was born on Sept 19,1925, in Kompong Boeng village, Kompong Lengdistrict,
Kompong Chhnang province. His father was Keng Siphan and his motherCheas Hon.
After obtaining a second-level baccalaureate in philosophy in 1946,he went to
continue his studies in France. While studying, he worked as aKhmer-language
teaching assistant at the Ecole Nationale des Langues orientatesvivantes [or
national school of modern Eastern languages] in Paris during theschool year
1947 to 1948 and 1951 to 1952. And during that same period, he taughtKhmer
language at the School of Oriental and African Studies, LondonUniversity,
during the school year 1948 to l950. He graduated with [a degreeequivalent to a
masters] in philosophy at the Faculty of Literature and HumanSciences in Paris
in 1951. His wife, Suzanne Colleville, passed away in 2003and he married Mrs
Sivorn on Saturday, 26 May 2008.

After inventing the Khmer-script keyboard for typewriter in 1952, he returnedto
Cambodia and held the position of professor at Sisowath High School in
PhnomPenh from 1952 to 1958.

He was a leader of the "Democratic Party" during the 1955 generalelection
following the 1954 treaty of Geneva. He was openly against the throne[as the
country's political system], and especially and directly opposed SamdechNorodom
Sihanouk, founder of the Sangkum Reastr Niyum party.

After the failure of the Democratic Party, the government arrested
andimprisoned Mr Keng Vannsak from September 13 to October 10 1955. After
hisrelease from prison, he published poems he had written while he was in jail.

Those poems had a very strong influence on Khmer writers at the time. In
1958,he was appointed director of the commission charged with editing a
Khmerliterature manual for high schools.

>From 1958 to 1962, he served as the dean of the Faculty of Literature and
>HumanSciences and the director of the National Institute of Pedagogy [1958 to
>I960].He also taught Khmer literature, culture and civilization at the Faculty
>ofliterature and Human Sciences and at the Buddhist Institute in Phnom Penh
>until1968. In mid-1968, the government stopped him from teaching and
>ordered[government] agents to watch his house, accusing him of inciting
>students totake action against the government at the time.

Moreover, the authorities searched his house and found books of Karl Marx
andMao Tse-Tung and magazines from China…in his personal library, which
promptedthe Ministry of [National] Security to arrest and detain him at the
RoyalPolice Academy with Sou Nem and Phuong Ton, accusing them of being
communistsand of inciting students and people to oppose the Royal Government of
theSangkum Reastr Niyum party.

After the 1970 political event waged by General Lon Nol, Cambodia became
theKhmer Republic, and the new government rehabilitated him [Keng
Vannsak],established the Khmer-Mon Institute, and appointed him as its head
with thegoal of promoting Khmer-Mon culture in order to make Khmer citizens
proud ofbeing Khmer and reunite all Khmer around this cultural inheritance
serving as aweapon capable of opposing Vietnamese communist imperialism.

Keng Vannsak wrote a thesis submitted to the Sorbonne university [in Paris]
in1971 entitled "Recherche d'un fond culturel Khmer [research on Khmercultural
inventory]."

Professor Keng Vannsak is a rare intellectual who had a long-term,
universalvision and concept of our Khmer culture and civilization. He
influenced Khmerliterature teachers for generations in Cambodia. He later was
appointed deputyrepresentative of Cambodia's permanent delegation to Unesco [UN
Educational,Scientific and Educational Organization] in Paris in 1971, and held
theposition of charge d'affaires of the Khmer Republic in France from October
1974to April 1975.

He lived in Montmorency on the outskirts of Paris until he died. He wrote
twoplays, poems and studies....

This great teacher had a far-reaching influence on Khmer-language students
andteachers across the country.

Mrs Sivorn, family members and relatives: We, his old-time students, friendsand
I would like to offer you our condolence and wish the soul of ProfessorKeng
Vannsak to remain at peace. We all would like to pay our respect to KengVannsak
for the very last time.
