Let me bring you back to the era of Republic of Cambodia. The whole country was under the military rule. Soldiers had the power. They raped, robbed, and terrorized towns and villages as they moved through their combat zones. Don't tell me that it was not true. I live through it. My grandparents house was dismantled by Lon Nol soldiers to help built their own homes somewhere else. If I'm not mistaken, their families were just right behind them. I'm not trying to make Khmer Rouge any better than what they were. The truth is that Khmer Rouge soldiers respected villagers as they moved through their journey. They played their cards right. That was why they were able to pull so many people to join them quickly in a short period of time. And they eventually won the war over the republic armies who were superior on weapons. That's enough of that. Cambodian society is filled with corruption and impunity. Lon Nol era was the worse. Khmer Rouge was worsen after they won the war. And today, those things are not getting any better. They are still corrupt and practice their impunity. The whole society DOES NOT have EQUAL OPPORTUNITY to make better lives. The poor still has to pass on their poverty from one generation to another endlessly. Will they ever get better? I doubt it that Cambodians will find a way to get out of corruption and impunity because those things are very normal to them. They are parts of their daily lives.
