They EXPLOITED them by giving them opportunity to be the superior to those who used to suppress them. The reality is that the poor went along with the Khmer Rouge because they strongly believe that they would change their lives in the future in a new revolution that put them first. * ** *We have learned today that poor peasants took it to the extreme because they had no education. They didn't know anything better. That was why the killing was so heinous during the Khmer Rouge regime. * *I want to make sure that all can understand. I'm not saying the policies of the Khmer Rouge was right for the country at the time. I only want to point the fact that poor peasants really care about their future. They took it when the opportunity arrived. Then they didn't know what to do except to follow unclear broken policies from Angkar. I hope you can understand this one. *
