Dear All,

As journalist Elizabeth Becker wrote during her coverage of the Khmer
Rouge, “To be Cambodian is to be Buddhist.” Religious Studies students
interested getting an in-depth experience with Buddhism in Asia can spend a
semester abroad becoming immersed in *Theravada Buddhism* with Global
Service Corps <http://www.globalservicecorps.org/>.

Buddhism and Khmer culture are inseparable for most Cambodians, and
students studying abroad with GSC will experience this remarkable union
firsthand. Highlights of GSC’s Buddhist Immersion program include
opportunities to:

· Visit UNESCO World Heritage Site, *Angkor Wat*

· *Live* in a local wat (temple), which serves as the center of
village life in Cambodia

· *Study* Buddhism under the tutelage of the wat’s resident monks

· Give back to the community by *teaching* English to monks and
local students

· Potentially become ordained as a monk

Students interested in Buddhism also participate in other meaningful
service-learning projects during their semester program with Global Service
Corps. *Cambodian culture and history*, *post-conflict recovery*,
*international
health*, and *global poverty *are among the topics students learn about
during their field work with local community development organizations. In
partnership with the University at Albany, State University of New York
(SUNY) and Paññasastra University of Cambodia, GSC offers 15-credit
Semester Programs and a 9-credit Summer Program focused on social,
cultural, and community development in Cambodia.

*GSC’s 15-credit, 15-week Fall or Spring Semester Program includes:*

· 3 weeks of academic training on Khmer language, social development
in post-conflict societies, service-learning theory, Buddhism and
meditation, Emotional Intelligence (EQ), and Cambodian culture and history

· 9 weeks of field work in the areas of public health, orphanage
care, assistance of slum populations, HIV/AIDS prevention and/or English
language instruction

· 3 weeks of Capstone projects, allowing students to synthesize
their studies and field experience

*The 9-credit, 9-week Summer Program includes:*

· 1 week of academic training on Khmer language, social development
in post-conflict societies, service-learning theory, Buddhism and
meditation, Emotional Intelligence (EQ), and Cambodian culture and history

· 8 weeks of varied service-learning field work in any of the
following programs: English Language Instruction, HIV/AIDS Prevention &
Public Health Education, Buddhist Immersion, Orphanage Care, International
Health, or an Integrated Program
