the National Assembly. KT/ Mai Vireak The salaries of all 53 elected members of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) may be cut because of their boycott of the National Assembly. Other action may also be taken against all 53 opposition members, who have been boycotting the National Assembly (NA) since last month in support of their acting president Kem Sokha, the parliament’s Permanent Committee said yesterday. According to a Cambodian People’s Party (CPP)-led Permanent Committee statement released yesterday, the NA’s second commission on Economics, Finance, Banking and Auditing led by Secretariat General Cheam Yeab will study possible disciplinary action against the CNRP members. The statement adds that by protesting and holding the boycott, the opposition had violated NA regulations. Mr. Yeab’s findings will be published, made public, and submitted to the Permanent Committee. Chheang Vun, a member of the ruling party and NA spokesman, said in a press conference yesterday that the investigation will be based on articles in the constitution, NA regulations and the Statute of Lawmakers. If the opposition members are found guilty of any violations, Mr. Vun added, they will be legally disciplined. “There are many types of disciplinary action such as stopping them from participating in plenary sessions for a period of time or cutting off salaries and other benefits,” he said. “The opposition heads of each commission received new cars recently for transportation. The question is whether they can use them for delivering petitions or for their party? The cars are provided to us for public work. “The main problem is that they boycotted the NA without prior notice.” Opposition spokesman Yim Sovann declined to comment on the Permanent Committee investigation, while Son Chhay, a member of the opposition and deputy head of the Commission on Economics, Finance, Banking and Auditing, could not be reached for comment yesterday. Members of the CNRP announced on May 27 that they could not work in the National Assembly while parliamentary immunity was being abused. The announcement was made after the attempted arrest of acting party president Mr. Sokha, who is accused of ignoring successive court summonses in connection with an alleged sex scandal. During a press conference at CNRP headquarters yesterday, party spokesman Yem Ponhearith said that while the CPP had yet to respond to a request for a renewed, bi-partisan dialogue, the political situation had improved slightly since last month.
