Trimming film spools. Two problems come to mind.
1. Edge fogging the film. That flange is there to keep the light away from
the emulsion.
2. Frame spacing and counters. Some (not all) film advance mechanisms
sense the amount of film still on the feed roll and control the frame
counter and advance in this fashion. You've all seen cameras with a little
roller in the feed chamber that kisses the roll of film.
Personally I can transfer a roll of 120 to a 620 spool faster than I can
trim the flange on a 120 spool. And note the diameter of the core itself.
