Marc,

It isn't as hard as you may think.  If you have access to a Dremil, you can
use a cut off wheel and do this free hand.  Another way is to use a metal
cutting blade in a coping saw. Drill a hole into the 4 corners of your
outline for the 6x6, insert the blade, attach it to the frame and slowly cut
away.  In both cases, keep to just inside the line you made to outline the
negative area.  You can then use a file to smooth the edges.  A trick to
filing aluminum is to rub chalk over the teeth of the file to prevent the
aluminum from loading up the file.

Cut both pieces of metal for the neg holder by sticking them together with
double side tape, AKA carpet tape.
