I am in the process of restoring a a Bolsey B to "as new" condition. The
shells are proving to be a problem....
Is anyone able to strip the chrome and electro nickel layers back to the
aluminium, and then replate these components in the same way?
The shells are stripped of the organic laquer and all subsidiary assemblies
and are ready to ship.....any volunteers!

Hi Keith,
If the parts are made from aluminuim yo could remove the plating with Nitric
acid, this is nasty stuff and will give off fumes as it removes the plating, so
it should be used either out of doors or in a fume cupboard but it will not
attac the alloy, do not use it on brass, copper or steel as it eats this for
breakfast, also be careful not to get it on your skin as it burns.
You could have them stripped be a plater, they used to do this as part of their
service, this process uses cyanide, even worse than acid.
Re-plating could be a problem as you need to get the nickel to 'stick' to the
aluminuim,
Plating nickel is fairly easy but the finish as the metal comes out of the bath
will be white and not shiny, for home plating the shine is put on with elbow
grease.
I haven't done any of this for years now but I do have more info on the subject
if you want it.
