Are we crackpot medievalists to build our own cameras, or creative types?
I am glad that many folks here enjoy building their own cameras as a
craft and hobby, but many of us want cameras which aren't available
commercially. Many of the smaller camera makers for custom models (like
panoramics and ultrawides and strip cameras) are really hobbyists who
have responded to an unmet need and market for cameras. New lenses (e.g.,
35mm grandagon) mean new cameras and designs are possible. New materials
like ABS plastic mean lightweight 4x5" ABS plastic cameras are now
available. And my own research has revealed an astonishing amount of
"lens hacking" or "lens bashing", which contrary to the sound of the
terms, is really about switching lenses from one camera to another (in
medium format, typically, where adapters are few and lenses very costly
in some systems (see http://people.smu.edu/rmonagha/bronhb.html for ex.).
