I converted a reel to develop 10' of 70mm film and I see no reason why it should not work with 5" film. And it would fit in a standard SS tank.
The original reel is the plastic 72 exposure reel that a few years ago Ilford sold with a roll of 35mm HP5. Cut the stem and insert a length of PVC tubing till it is just the right width.
