Kalart designed their rangefinder to be used with an accessory device
called the Focuspot for very low level light work. A beam splitter prism
allows outgoing light to travel the same optical path as incoming light
for measurement with the eye. Since the beam splitter is not 100%
effective in blocking light to the rangefinder viewing eyepiece, there
is some spillover. The same optics are used. In considering a laser to
replace the focused light bulb of the Kalart Focuspot, it is prudent to
block the normal rangefinder eyepiece during laser operation do that
laser light does not enter the operator's eye.

It also simplifies the construction of the "low light level focus"
device which can use the port provided for that purpose.
