They are used for correction of perspective. If you
ever looked up at a tall building, you probably
noticed that the sides of the building converge. This
can be straightened out by raising the lens in
relationship to the film. This causes the light waves
to travel farther to the film at the bottom, causing
the light cone to widen correcting for the
convergence. That is the classic example, there are
many other reasons for movements. Your local library
probably has a book which will explain it all to you.
The question is are movements essential for your
subjects treated in the way you would like them to be
treated. For example, if you want to do architectural
photography, movements are essential. For low end
wedding photography,,,,nahhhh!!!!
