Another great reference which explains this subject, and many other subjects regarding cameras, is (oddly enough) "The Camera" by Ansel Adams.
I've settled on this and "The Negative" and "The Print" as my standard photography references, along with a few others which go into more detail on certain acane aspects of the craft (like how to use pyro, or test results for variable contrast papers, or a book of old darkroom chemical formulas, albumen printing, etc.). (And of course, there's always the how-to manuals about building X-ray glasses, or better brain cells the Charles Atlas way....) I like Adams's treatment of the subject because he goes into data about all kinds of cameras as well as view camera basics. Plus he could really write. (Where's that book on how to brew beer?)
