I've refinished several old view cameras; Ansco, Crown View, Korona.  I always use shellac, a number of coats sanded in between with a final coat of wax  to give it a warm glow.  I believe most of the older view cameras were either shellac or varnish.....they didnt have that many choices in the early part of the 20th century.  Especially for something that was mass produced. Now the british and european cameras, I have no idea.

I have that same camera and the finish appears to be a shellac.

Subject: [Cameramakers] Finish on old Agfa/Ansco 8x10s and 5x7s

Hello,

I recently saw an Agfa/Ansco 8x10 on eBay in beautiful condition with
that signature dark stain and gloss finish. The seller said that it was
Ansco's "A" finish. Someone once told me what they used but I forgot --
was it lacquer? Oil? French polish? Shellac? Anybody know?

While we're on the subject does anybody know what Deardorff used? Or
what anybody else who's manufacturing the things are currently using?

What kind of finish do you use?

In the past I've used mostly tung oil and occasionally shellac. Both are
nice.

Any tips on this would be vastly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

'Bye for now,

--Michael
