This is one of the issues which makes digital printing so interesting;
it is already feasible to do very long panoramic prints, and I'm told
some color printers will print to the edges of the 13" wide paper. I
suspect it is or will be possible to slice images into a series of 
strips, and then have the printer knock out a series of continuous strip
prints 13" wide by however many feet, then cut and spray adhesive and mount
them on a backing. Granted, it might take a week to printout a really big 
one ;-) And ink will be a major cost center ;-) but still cheap vs $6k ;-)
